Kid’s Science Lab Supplies
Once children begin to reach higher grade levels, it is important for parents to start considering buying school supplies in different subjects other than the typical notebooks and pens for reading and writing. Science labs and classes start to increase the need for a variety of different supplies and parents are usually provided a list from the teachers describing what is needed. The very basics include a magnifying glass, and a protractor. But as kids begin to advance grade levels, their needs for science lab supplies will increase, especially if they aim to follow this down the line in their career paths.
One of the most important supplies your aspiring scientist will ever get will be a microscope. Buying your child their first microscope can be an exciting and fun time. But since it is only the first one and children change their interests so quickly, do not invest too much money into this. If it is for school, your child’s teacher will provide specific details on exactly what type and quality of microscope your child will need. Once you have purchased the microscope, take the time to have fun with your child and get to know all the functions of the new product. Children tend to lose interest in things that they do not understand completely, so have fun exploring all the things your child can learn with an microscope.
Another essential science lab supply is magnets. Learning the scientific methods behind magnets can also be an extremely interesting new thing to learn for your child. A serious of magnets will help your child explore all the laws of attraction.
Prisms are also usually included in science kits for children. Kids love to learn how the sun can affect the beautiful colorful lights reflected by prisms. There is usually certain elements of botany experimentation included in a child’s science kit and aspects regarding the study of space.
When it comes time for your child to select what experiment they wish to conduct for their school science experiment, take the time to listen to what they are interested in. The school science fair is a notorious time for parents to take over their children’s projects and take full control. This truly cheats your child out of what can be an incredibly fun time for them. In fact, the school science fair provides a perfect opportunity for your child to explore their talents and interests and truly get creative.
Should your child wish to build a volcano that actually erupts for their project, they will need paper mache, baking soda, liquid soap and some red food coloring to make sure the eruption has the right effect.
A solar system is a fairly easier project. All that is required is Styrofoam balls of various sizes, some paint to color them, a few wire hangers to situate the balls accordingly and some Bristol board to create an effective backdrop.
And no matter what project your kids science decides on, make sure they have a proper lab coat and protective eye ware, along with their telescopes for sale!
Purchasing science lab equipment for your children isn’t just to keep them entertained – science toys can actually educate children on many different scientific topics, teaching them how to think scientifically from a young age!
Ant Roles In An Ant Colony
Ants are one of the few creatures that can be found living all over the world. Scientists estimate that the tiny insects have been living on earth in organized colonies for more than 100 million years.
Ants are omnivores and their diet of choice is fruit, seeds and other insects. They don’t live that long, about 45 to 60 days is about it, although, some worker and queen ants live longer. Ants range in size but most are pretty small, about 2 to 7 mm long, with six legs. Each leg has three joints. Ants are terrifically strong. They can lift about 20 times their body weight.
Ants are also pretty smart, as far as insects go. Their brains have about 250,000 brain cells, which is the largest among insects. It’s interesting to note that if you weighed all of the ants in the world you would find it to be the same or greater than the sum weight of all the people. Pretty amazing! It’s also notable that the lifespan of the male ant is less than that of a female.
Each ant colony has males, females and workers. There are several million ants inside each colony. When a colony grows unmanageable, winged males and females leave and start a new colony. The males and females mate during their flight to a new location.
The queen ant is the head of the colony. After she lays her eggs to start the new colony, she will shed her wings. Remarkably, the queen ant mates only once. The sperm from that union is used for years to produce thousands of offspring. Each ant knows their place in the colony. They have elaborate social structures in which the various jobs are divided among the different ants. The ants are colored in different shades of green, blue, purple and yellow depending on the kind of work they perform. It’s the yellow ant’s job to clean up the nest while the orange ants are in charge of caring for the new eggs and young ants.
Ants are meticulous about keeping the nest clean. They have special compartments for garbage and dead ants. The queen can be expected to live for many years and even produces a chemical that lets other ants know she’s healthy. The workers lick the chemical from her body.

Calendars – Why They Can Be Out
Thousands of years ago, ancient Greek astronomers calculated that the direction of the Earth’s axis is continually, albeit in a very slow way, changing in a regular pattern. The variation is very similar to the manner a spinning top slowly leans one way and then another as it slows down. It is a wobble that happens as its axis alters direction.
This peculiar movement of the planet is due to several factors, the most significant of which is something called ‘precession’. Precession stems from the fact that the Earth is not a flawless sphere. It is in fact about twenty-seven miles longer around the Equator that it is about the Poles. The Earth then is oblate, or fat around the middle like middle-aged spread, but it is due to the rotation not to its age.
If you picture the Earth with its Poles off centre. Then rotate that image and you will find that any point, except the very centre of the axis, will travel in a circle. But very, very gradually. So slowly that it takes 26,000 years to go full circle and get back to where it started from.
This point then, any point you want, is very gradually shifting its position in relation to the stars because the axis is gyrating too. The result of this is that, what we call the North Star (formally called Polaris, which is in fact one degree off true North) will not be over our North Pole one day. In fact, by about 15,000 AD, Vega will be almost above the North Pole, although it will be about four degrees off true North. But even this will not endure, and by 28,000 AD, Polaris will be back above where it is nowadays.
One of the effects of the precession is that seasons change. They modify the dates that they take place, so that Summer could come earlier or later. The amazing thing about our calendar is that it is corrected for that (with the leap year). If it were not, the vernal or Spring equinox would move over 13,000 years from March 21st to September 21st., which is the date of the autumnal equinox, precisely half a year later.
It is for this reason that the precession of the Earth is generally referred to as the “Precession of the Equinoxes”. Although the precession of the equinoxes is very slow, it can be readily observed. The correct year of 325.25 days is the length of time from one vernal equinox to the next vernal equinox, however, it takes 20 minutes and 24 seconds longer for the Sun to appear in precisely the same place with relation to the stars behind it over the same period. This is why accurate star maps have to be stamped with the exact time and date to which they refer.
